Lot of people gives the excuse of lack of capital as their major reason for not starting their own business. Do you consider $700 in cash and an old pick-up truck is enough to start a $100 million worth business? That is all Brian Scudamore had when he started his summer job back in 1989. See how far you can go with innovative ideas. His job is cleaning up junk. Do not laugh; his business is now spread over 4 countries and in 100 cities with an estimate value of 100 million. With the aim of becoming the Fedex of junk removal, this young Entrepreneur is setting standards for all other established ventures.
He dropped out of college with only one year left to become a full time junk man. With limited capital, but equipped with abundance of dedication and a clear firm vision, he started out his business ““The Rubbish Boys” with the slogan “We’ll Stash Your Trash in a Flash!”. Today it has become a successful international company and goes by the name 1-800-GOT-JUNK?
How Brian pulled this thing off? His business model is unique. There are no major competitors as most companies are not interested in junk removal as their business model.
And all his marketing is in the business name it self. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Is printed on his shiny trucks and they act as mobile billboards. The name itself is responsible for 90 % of his sales.
This is one thing you should pay attention to when deciding your business name. When people see these trucks on road, they know what this is all about. And there is no need to remember the company name and their phone number separately. Just the image of truck in your memory will prompt you to call that number when you are in need of removing your garbage. More calls mean more business to the company. More business means more trucks. More trucks mean more business again. This cycle keeps on going and breaking Brian’s bank account records almost daily.
We live in year 2008. That does not mean we have to follow all the new business rules and theories to become successful. In fact, most of the successful business owners are not even aware of business theories. In this Era most companies tend to recruit people on contract basis or out source all the work. But Brian hires people. Make them part of the company. A classic business model which is still successful. This makes employees work as a family.
And like most traditional companies they maintain their own company culture. They call their head office “Junktion”. Call their email “junk mail”. And most importantly they do all their business operations solely out of cash flow. Which is very rare in today’s business world. All these concepts has helped “1-800-GOT-JUNK?” to come to the status where they are now.
This business did not start with a huge capital. No one believed there will be enough business to sustain in the long run. Not even Brian’s father. This is of course a simple business. Their recipe for success is simple. This proves that you do not have to do outrageous things to become successful. You do not have to have huge amount of capital. Clear vision and the belief in yourself can take you to the sky limits.
You might have a brilliant idea for a new business .But the idea itself will not improve your bank account. But the actions will. Brian came up with the new business idea of “cleaning up junk”. I bet your business idea is better than that. Brian’s idea made him $100 million richer.Only God knows how much you are going to make. But if you sit here and do nothing, even I can tell you how much you are going to make. And that number is not pretty at all.
I am finding it difficult to update my blog everyday as I am bit busy with my offline business. I have been doing major price cut downs as people do not have much money in their hands these days. Did you notice that shop owners are more nice to you lately. They seem really happy to see you walking in to their shops? Same story here in Sri Lanka too :-)
