Recession Proof Blogging

Last week I read that Chrysler has filed for Bankruptcy.

Everyday we read how thousands of people are losing their jobs and facing salary cut downs.

It should be the same for internet marketers and bloggers. Shouldn’t it?

NEW YORK eMarketer has projected an estimate that advertisers will spend $24.5 billion online this year in the U.S. Marketers spend more on online ads, while they spend less on advertising placed in other media, such as newspapers, radio and magazines.

The current economic forces both reinforce the new advertising models and make them more permanent. Making what we do recession proof :-)

Internet marketers have increased their advertising budget to eliminate the sales gap which is created by the economic crisis. They try to reach more people in order to maintain the sales level or to see their sales grow.

There are over 50 Million web sites with a sizable daily traffic. Multiply it by 4 if you want to add the entire one hit wonders to the tally. ( Visited only by owner, his family and few friends) It is safe to say that these sites will never see a dollar.

So let’s take the first 50 million sites and divide it by the projected advertising spend. If I could magically split the $25 billion evenly among all web sites, We would get $500 each. Not impressive huh?

But this is far from reality. Web is not divided equally and neither are the dollars. The top 100,000 most trafficked web sites, which is only .2% from all web sites get 75% of the total Internet traffic. These top sites are going to take the major share from that $25 billion.

I have no complains here. I would love to be in the top 100k and if alexa is the measure I am proudly in it. The point is , no one can stop you from becoming a major player. I never believed that I can create a web site which gets 100,000 page views a day. But I did, my most recently launched web site yesterday had 100,000 page views.

I read on eMarketer that the average price for online advertising is currently $2.50 for a thousand impressions. (CPM) If we remove the price of top sits, the price for 1000 page views is $.61

[ad]

If you can create a quality web site and work hard on increasing your page views and unique visitors, money will follow you.

It is not easy as it sounds but I have never seen a hard worker fails. Income from this blog is increasing every month even though I am not writing frequently as I used to do. The hard work I put in to this 4-5 months back is paying me dividends nicely.

If I am able to do this, I do not see any reason why you can’t do it. I am a Lilliput when comparing with most of the web sites in my niche. And that is what keeps me going.

I see a whole new world if I can climb few more steps. Do believe in yourself and never give up. You are aware of a recession proof income opportunity and do not let that opportunity get away.

Refer pubmatic if you have any question about these figures. It might not be correct to the last cent but it surely gives you a very good idea about the whole industry. We have not included affiliate marketing figures here. If we can predict the affiliate spending for this year, the Income potential number will be much higher.

Anything that makes sense to people will pay back in one or another way sooner or later. If you want tea you have to boil water which means you have to wait until the water is actually boiling ;)

The internet is not recession proof :)

Only small bloggers that use advertising services to monetize are safe because their ads to go around… the agencies that are renting your space are probably losing money. Google has seen a decrease and I assume many others as well…

It’s been years since blogging has been practiced. But it’s just recently that it has been considered as one of the addicting fads. Many teenagers have resorted to blogging as an outlet for their emotions, a little online nook where they can blurt out whatever just bugs them or whatever makes them feel elated. Savvy marketers have discovered that blogging is one of the best Internet marketing methods that won’t cost you a cent.

What exactly is blogging? Blog is the widely used term that refers to web log. Basically, a blog is an online journal. A blog could be set up to no cost at all, and can be used for just for the fun of it or for business reasons.

Blogging will always be a recession-proof business. It’s a minimal investment compared to any other businesses out there, your overhead is minimal too since all you need is content and money to pay for your servers.

Electric Drum Posted on May 19, 2009 at 5:15 am

That 24.5 billion is just the money spent on advertising. A lot of sites don’t sell advertising space on their sites. They offer their own products or are purely informational, so you can reduce the number of competing sites by that amount (whatever it is).

Internet advertising and marketing is not only cost effective but it is more result oriented too. The favorable results and the reasons for the failures can be easily analyzed.

I find this topic on how to Recession Proof Your Blog this few step will help you…

1. Focus Upon Content
Keep writing, great content doesn’t take a lot of money to
produce. It just takes time and patience.

2. Build Networks
Cooperation works on recession. Team up with another blogs for
promotion of mutual content.

3. Don’t Panic
Write posts that focus on feeling good, and are proactive, not
negative.
4. Build Your Own Products/Services
Bloggers that use their blogs to sell themselves, or a product
or service that they sell add another monetization stream to
their blog.

5. Build Authority
One of the most powerful things that you can do at any time as a
blogger is to work hard on building up your profile and
perceived expertise and authority in an industry. This is
especially powerful in times of uncertainty where people are
looking for leadership, advice and stability. Build
relationships and be the most useful person that you can in
these times and you’ll position yourself as a leader in your
field.

6. Backup
Be even more rigorous with backups in-case someone goes bust.

7. Diversify Your Income
Assess whether your readers’ information/entertainment needs
have shifted. If so, adapt your content to stay insanely
relevant.

8. Look for Opportunities in the Negative
Be a wise move at this time.

9. Find ways to Expand and Improve your Blog
Spend some money on ads and PR. Most people blow budget during
good econ. but when times are bad is when u need it most.

10. Track Track Track
Look at what people are searching for to find your blog, what
they are searching for while on your blog, what posts are most
popular, what pages are leaking most readers, where people are
clicking on your page – all of this tells you how your blog is
being used but can reveal ways that it can be improved.

11. Work Hard and Work Smart
Recession proof by focusing, focusing, and focusing. Dont try
to be everything to everybody. Concentrate on your niche.

12. Cut Costs
Analyze recent server loads and see if you might be able to
scale down to a more modest hosting plan.

13. Experiment with Income Streams
The key is to experiment and test different income streams,
even old ones that you’ve previously written off might now be
performing.

I agree with the comment about focusing blog posts on positive upbeat stories. Not that you would take a “Pollyanna” approach to it. There are plenty of good things going on all the time. It just doesn’t bring the ratings that bad news does, so the news outlets always focus on the bad. It is up to the rest of us to give a more balanced picture of the world.

Great article. I was just getting in a groove to making a living when the recession hit full blown. So I don’t make a whole lot, but I wish I had gotten in earlier to get sites established well before the recession started. Its going to be a lot tougher for new webmasters to make much money and will probably get discouraged if they are just starting now.

eranda Posted on June 7, 2009 at 12:42 am

@ Train Horns,
You deserve a seperate page here for your valuable input. Keep them coming.

@ BB forum,
It is true. It is going to be tougher. But it is never too late. Best times will come when the recession is over. Hopefully by the end of this year. :-)

I think that those blogs that are successful are the ones that focus on quality content that engages the reader rather than on hastily designed websites and blogs that are solely designed for money making purposes. I also agree that there is money out there to be made with some hardwork and a good backlink building strategy
